Roatan
Geography
Roatan is located about 40 miles off the Northern Coast of Honduras and is part of the Bay Islands group known as Las Islas de la Bahia. Roatan is the largest and most populated island in this group. These islands were formed millions of years ago by volcanic action and created what is now known as the Bonacca Ridge. The world's second largest coral reef kisses these islands as it meanders along the Central American coastline coming within a few yards of Roatan.
Roatan measures approximately 30 miles long and two to five miles wide. A mountainous ridge runs the entire length and through the middle of the island. A casual drive offers many scenic vistas overlooking the shorelines of sandy beaches, the spectacular reef, iron shore coral, the tropical forests, and the towns and homes that dot the island. Don't forget your camera!
